Ro-Z and Darryl Mendelson began Tai Chi Chuan lessons with Sifu Dr. Fred Wu in 1973. In 1975 they opened Monkeys Retreat Tai Chi/Chi Kung Center and Bookstore. They began teaching under Dr. Wu's direction and continue the study and teaching of the different paths to locating and cultivating Chi for Health, Happiness and Longevity.

Their study with Dr. Wu continued until his death in 2000. Along with teaching them several different Tai Chi forms, Dr. Wu taught them Chi kung, Taoist Breathing and Meditation, The Fundamentals of Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoist Philosophy, I-Ching, Push Hands, Self-Defense Applications, Ba Gua, Hsing-I and various Kung Fu forms.
Dr. Wu taught many different forms of Tai Chi but usually started by teaching students a form based on the Yang family form and further developed by Lee Ying Arng who modified it for more balance and symmetry. Dr. Wu further modified this form. When a student had learned this form, Dr. Wu would teach it again at a second level where circular motion, smoothness, and continuity and rocking motion were emphasized.

Since Dr. Wu's death, Ro-z and Darryl have studied with other Tai Chi and Chi Kung (Qigong) teachers. They learned Chen Syle Tai Chi (Lao Jia) from Master Chen Qingzhou, 19th generation lineage holder and guardian of the original Tai Chi form.
Chen Qingzhou is a 19th-generation lineage holder in Chen Family Tai ChI and a direct descendant of the ancestral founder of Chen Village where Taijiquan originated. Born in 1934, he began training in Chen Family Old Frame under his father, Chen Wufang. He was later sent to study with the 18th-generation master, Chen Zhaopei, disciple of Chen Fake.

Ro-Z and Darryl have studied Chen Style Simplified 26 Tai Chi form and Chen Style Straight sword with Chen Qingzhou's eldest son Chen Youze who was China National Push-hands Champion, a four-time consecutive Chen Village Push Hands Champion and a China National Coach and Competition Judge.

Further studies have included several forms of Qigong with Master Zhongxian Wu, including Shamanic Tiger Qigong, which they currently teach weekly.

Sifu (Teacher) Ro-z Mendelson
Sifu Ro-z Mendelson has been teaching since 1975. He teaches Tai Chi, Pa Kua (BaQua), Hsing-I, Taoist Meditation and numerous other forms of Chi Kung (Qigong) that were taught to him by his first teacher Dr Fred Wu . He has learned other forms of Tai Chi & Qigong from several teachers and is presently studying with Master Zhongxian Wu. Ro-z is a licensed massage therapist.
Sifu (Teacher) Darryl Mendelson
Sifu Darryl Mendelson has been teaching since 1975. He teaches Lee's modified Tai Chi and Taoist Meditation and several forms of Qigong as taught to him by his teacher Dr. Fred Wu . He also teaches Chen Style Tai Chi which he learned from Master Qingzhou and Chen Taiji of Ohio. He is currently studying Qigong with Master Zhongxian Wu. who has made several visits to Columbus. He teaches a weekly class in Chinese Shamanic Tiger Qigong, which he learned from Master Wu.

Lee's Modified Tai Chi Chuan. A Yang form, modified by Lee Ying Arng and further modified by their teacher Dr Fred Wu. Class consists of the Tai Chi form (a slow, relaxing, graceful series of movements) the Fundamentals of Chi, Chi Kung (Qigong), Taoist Breathing and Meditation, Push Hands, Self-Defense Applications, Philosophy,I-Ching, Astrology and more.
Pa Kua (BaQua). Guang Hwa Mountain Style (Ro-z was the first of only two students Dr Wu taught this whole system)
Hsing-I Including but not limited to Five Elements and Twelve Animals
Chinese Shamanic Tiger Qigong (Laohu Gong) as taught to the Mendelson's by Master Zhongxian Wu. This uniquely potent practice is designed to bolster health and deepen spiritual connection to universal energy. It is a powerful 24-movement Qigong form that integrates posture, movement, mind and breath It.combines the traditions of ancient Shamanism, Confucianism, Daoism, classical Chinese medicine, and the Martial Arts.
